Gala Remembers 2018 was an ambitious community project developed to provide a variety of activities and events in remembrance of the centenary of the end of World War I.
Following on from the huge success of the Gala Remembers 2018 programme, the volunteers involved were keen to deliver a legacy, both to the project and to the 639 men from Galashiels who lost their lives in one of the deadliest conflicts known to man.
The Book of Commemoration is one of the legacy projects and, in addition to acting as a record of what was delivered in 2018, it was intended to become a catalyst for on-going community engagement. With the launch of the digital-book was an open invitation for people to contact Energise Galashiels Trust if they had any further information on any of the 639 men listed.
With significant volumes of information, covering a broad spectrum of topics, we started by dividing everything into three clear chapters for this ‘living’ digital record.
Following this, we scoped the best application available to really showcase the information in the best way possible. Deciding on Issuu, Flickr, YouTube and SoundCloud enabled us to give justice to the rich and detailed content we had available.
The digital book has been exceptionally well received by everyone who has taken the time to read it.
The reports from Issuu confirm that people are enjoying the book and we’ve already had members of the public reach out with future additions.
“The Book of Commemoration is a fantastic legacy for the town of Galashiels and all thanks to the huge contribution McGowan Marketing made. I would have no hesitation in recommending Emily and her team to any group or business looking to promote themselves.”
– Bill White, Chair of Gala Remembers 2018
